Dangerzone Privacy Policy

Dangerzone is a free and open source tool that converts potentially dangerous PDFs, office documents, and images into safe PDFs. It is a project of Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

What we collect

FPF does not collect any information from your use of Dangerzone.

Dangerzone is a local desktop application, and conversions take place in an offline sandbox on your own computer. There is no account to create, no telemetry or analytics, and no server of ours that receives anything from the application.

If you contact us for support, file an issue on GitHub, or otherwise communicate with us, we will have whatever information you choose to send us. Please do not include sensitive documents or source-identifying information in a bug report. Issues filed on GitHub are public and subject to GitHub's privacy statement.

Third parties that may process information

GitHub. As frequently as once every 12 hours, Dangerzone will query the GitHub releases API and GitHub Container registry (ghcr.io) in order to check for updates. These are HTTPS requests that may include your IP address and connection metadata. This information is subject to GitHub’s Privacy Statement. FPF is not privy to it, except as aggregate anonymous download statistics provided by GitHub. Note that a network observer may be able to infer that you have Dangerzone installed from these connections.

Dangerzone rate-limits these checks to minimize usage information leaked to GitHub. You can disable these checks completely from the Dangerzone application. If you do so, we strongly recommend you update manually on a regular basis.

Microsoft. If you obtained Dangerzone through the Microsoft Store, Microsoft may collect information about your acquisition and use of the application under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. FPF does not control this and receives only aggregate, anonymized download and rating statistics. Signed installers are also available from dangerzone.rocks.

Changes to this policy

We may revise this privacy policy from time to time, but any revision will be consistent with FPF's mission. The most current version will always be available at dangerzone.rocks/privacy. If we make changes we believe are material, we will note them here and in the Dangerzone release notes.
